GOLD

Most gold can be identified by its markings. You may have seen 10kt, 14kt, etc. on your jewelry. This may or may not be the correct evaluation of what the item may be. Appraising your jewelry will be the true test to what something is made out of. Manufacturing companies out of Asia have made a habit out of creating items out of vermeil (gold plated sterling silver) and selling it as gold with a karat value.

8kt, 9kt, 10kt, 14kt, 18kt, 22kt, 24kt are the most common markings that you will find on a piece that is made out of gold. Other markings that are sometimes used are .585 for 14kt and .750 for 18kt. This signifies the gold percentage that is used to create the piece.

Gold is most commonly tested for content through acid tests. It can also be done by using an electrical charge with the use of a gel when scratching the gold.

SILVER

Is marked with sterling, silver or 925

PLATINUM

Is not always marked, but when it is, it will say PLAT or .950

VERMEIL

Gold plated sterling silver, sometimes marked as gold but always appraised as silver
